I didn’t realize the impact that a rubber cockroach would have on a child.

I was at a kids’ camp with about 20 kids from our church when I decided to play a joke on a junior counselor.  We were in the cafeteria having lunch when the kids called her over to our table.  I put the roach in my mouth and waited for her to approach.  As she walked closer to the table, there were giggles and snickers from the kids sitting close by.  I signaled for her to stoop down closer to me, when suddenly I began to laugh and the roach fell out of my mouth.  BUSTED!

Her reply was, “You wouldn’t have scared me!  You played that trick on me at kids’ camp when I was 9, and I’ve never forgotten you since.”

I realized then just how a minute of my time could impact the life of a child, and the importance of time spent with children.  I’m so glad I have made the decision to spend countless hours investing Christian values and self-confidence in the lives of children.  I wouldn’t trade my life with anyone.
